From Victorian Majesty to Modern Masterpiece
Until its demolition in 1998, the original Villiers Hotel stood as a monument to magnificent Manx hospitality. Its commanding presence on Loch Promenade — with grandiose façade overlooking the sweep of Douglas Bay — welcomed generations of visitors from the late 19th century, well into the 20th.
The sight of that ornate exterior and nearby Jubilee Clock was familiar and uplifting to scores of beachbound tourists, taking in the wonders of the Isle of Man’s stunning shores.
Even after it was gone, it left an indelible mark along the bayside — a space still referred to this day as ‘The Gateway to Douglas’.
Although the Victorian structure has been absent from the skyline for decades, its spirit endures in Villiers Square. Where horse-drawn carriages once delivered excited holidaymakers, today's innovative businesses find their home in a modern architectural icon that will define the landscape of the promenade for generations to come.
